AWARD WINNING JOURNALIST CURTIS ANDERSON JOINS TRACKTOWN USA
Jesse Abramson Award Winner Will Serve As Organization’s Director of Communications

Eugene, Ore.  President of TrackTown USA Vin Lananna today announced the hiring of Curtis Anderson as the organization’s Director of Communications. Anderson, the 2008 recipient of the Jesse Abramson award for excellence in track and field journalism by the Track and Field Writers of America, will assume his responsibilities at TrackTown USA on September 23.

“Curtis is an accomplished journalist who has been covering the highest levels of track and field for more than 25 years,” said CEO of TrackTown USA Michael Reilly. “We are excited to provide him an expanded platform for telling the sport’s stories and creating a forum for fans to hear directly from the voices of athletes. His addition to our staff represents a great opportunity for fans of track and field. There are many outstanding stories in TrackTown and we look forward to enabling Curtis to increase the coverage that he has provided of athletes, teams and the sport throughout his career.”

In his role as Director of Communications, Anderson will be responsible for directing the communication strategies and public information activities for TrackTown USA, creating creative content for the organization’s website and social media platforms, providing editorial direction on the organization’s print and electronic publications and contributing to press operations at events conducted by TrackTown USA.

Anderson, a 1978 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, has spent the past 27 years covering sports at The Register-Guard newspaper in Eugene. He also worked at the Wisconsin State Journal, Newport News-Times and Coos Bay World.

“Working at The Register-Guard has been the best experience of my professional life,” Anderson said. “However, after 35 years as a sports journalist, I feel fortunate that this opportunity with TrackTown USA has presented itself. I’m looking forward to shining a spotlight on the sport I’ve grown to love and respect, and perhaps, help shape its future in Eugene and beyond. What could be better than that?”

In addition to winning the 2008 Jesse Abramson award, Anderson was a recipient of The Associated Press Sports Editors awards in 2007 for his feature story on the near-death and recovery of former University of Oregon great Alberto Salazar and in 2009 for his coverage of the University of Oregon’s men’s track and field team winning the NCAA Indoor title.  In 2008, he was honored by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association for best sports story for his writing on the University of Oregon’s investment in its track and field program.

“This role for Curtis creates positive momentum for TrackTown’s mission to enhance the sport,” Lananna said. “His appreciation for the needs of the media will strengthen the joint efforts of the University of Oregon, IAAF, USA Track & Field and the U.S. Olympic Committee at all our major events.”

Anderson begins working at TrackTown USA on September 23 and his stories will be featured onGoTrackTownUSA.com and on Twitter at @GoTrackTownUSA.

I feel Ken's pain. Curtis has been an invaluable journalist for a sport with a dearth of skilled writers in position to make an impact outside of the sport's online presence. Wish him the best in his new role!
